What is caller ID spoofing?

Phone caller ID Spoofing is faking the caller ID of a phone. It lets you call a person and have any telephone number you wish be displayed on the persons telephone. Caller ID spoofing is bad news especially for young children and teens who have come to rely on what they see when the phone rings and give private information out over the phone thinking its safe, when in fact is very dangerous.

This is creating an outlet for child predators to disguise or even create a familiar phone number and voice that a child trusts, which will lead to disaster. Parents need to be aware that caller ID is not fool proof and should not be relied upon. If a youngster is allowed to answer the phone enforce the rule that they should not give out private info like gate codes, never say “mom and dad are not at home.” Make sure your children never give out information should a stranger call and want to know any personal information even if the caller id says police, a utility company or your childs school.

Here is an example of how Caller ID Spoof works:

Caller ID Spoof can be used on friends or used as a prank.  For a predator, they can even disguise him or herself to appear as a family member. Many caller ID spoofing services give you ability to change how your voice sounds and even change a male voice into a female voice or female into male voice!

Today, a simple thing like relying on caller ID has now become a method to harass and even torture millions and there is no end in sight. The majority of stalking victims report being harassed by phone and caller-id spoof technology has been used. Sadly, it is not known if any cases that involve the use of caller ID spoof have been prosecuted within the United States to date.

Alexis A. Moore, President and CEO of Survivors In Action and a Cyberstalking expert had this to say: “Today, child predators have the tools that they need at their finger tips and as our society continues to become more hi-tech the predator will become that much more sophisticated.”

How can it be legal for a person to change their phone number and caller ID?  Well it  is legal and the datafurnishing industry selling our private records is legal so the best thing we can all do for now until legislation is passed and enforced is to understand that caller ID spoofing exists and that you need to protect yourself until our antiquated laws catch up.

The FTC should step in as they have with key logging spyware  this past year, and halt this business practice today! We need response from our nation’s law makers – no more excuses!

If you are a victim of cyberstalking you are not alone! Survivors In Action specifically works with families who are cyberstalked.

About the Author:

I founded Women’s Legal Resource in 2006 to help women who face the brutal challenges of the family law court system. After going through my own experience in the Family Law Court without the financial resources to obtain proper counsel, I was faced having to represent myself.

All though I faced many legal hurdles, I felt the need to help other women and advocate specifically for those who are Domestic Violence Victims.

Women’s Legal Resource is a nonpartisan organization that supports the efforts for Domestic Violence Reform and Family Law Reform. The present laws as they are written are flawed and do not meet the language of our ever growing savvy Hi-Tech protocol of the 21st Century, which places victims in danger.

DV Victim and former Ventura County Sheriff set for civil service hearing to get job back

Ventura County Sheriffs Department should be held accountable for firing Claudia Valenciana and for not protecting one of their own. There was no excuse for terminating Valenciana from her position as Deputy Sheriff. This appears to have been a sexist move in the good ol’boysclub. There is this saying in Ventura County, “Go to Ventura on Vacation, come back on probation.”

Question…

Is it possible to trace the origin of a robo-call that spoofs the caller id?

An unknown malicious person is making thousands of robo-calls and using my home phone number as the caller id. When a person answers the call the robo-caller hangs up on them. The recipient sees my home phone number in the caller id and calls me to ask “why did you call me and hang up?” I got about 50 of those calls today and finally had to take the phone off the hook. Is there any way to discover the physical location of the device that is making these robo-calls?

Answers…

Answer by Ben
Not exactly. This person is most likely using a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service to spoof his caller ID. My own VoIP phone service lets me choose whatever caller ID I want, but I’m always honest and use my own name & phone number.

The telephone company (of the people who are receiving the spoofed calls) can trace the call using a system called ANI. This would only trace the call back to the VoIP service facility and not to the actual caller’s address however. The VoIP service may have the address on file though, but the address is probably bogus (most VoIP termination services don’t verify a client’s service address).

It’s worth noting that VoIP companies may have the IP address of the person (which could be used to locate the suspect in co-operation with the police force / court).

There are also many online Caller ID spoof services which are basically just like the VoIP method except you don’t even need an account to make spoofed calls, and that means it’s even harder to trace. Although depending on the service, they may log the phone number that the suspect originally called from.

There is also nothing you can do to block your phone number from being used by spoofed calls unfortunately. The caller ID standard is very much open for abuse. The ANI system that telephone companies, emergency services and other businesses use is the only caller identification system that cannot be easily spoofed.

Answer by joe r
if one of the people called from this number initiates a *57 trace they will be able to obtain the ANI of the number that is making the calls…

but other than that.. there is not too much that can be done…

Answer by Carl N
Wow. Not much fun, I’ll bet. It’s not probable that the Robo Caller can be traced, because of how the calls are being made…but, you still have a chance. When they call you, explain the situation and record the phone number. When you get your phone log of numbers, dates and times, call the police. They may be able to initiate a set of listings from the phone company that will track down the source of the calls. Perhaps the calling pattern will show called numbers in a particular city or neighborhood. Since the numbers that display are programmed into certain outbound trunks, it could be an honest mistake.

Good luck and I hope you get an answer to the source of the calls.

Carl
