What is the best provider for a local phone number that forwards to another phone number?
I need a phone number (toll free or local) that will forward to a pre-existing phone number, but I do not want to use grandcentral (Closed beta, anyway.) and I would prefer to get the phone number from a large REGULATED company (ATT, Cell Phone carrier), rather than something like toolfreeforwarding.com where technical errors could cause me to lose the number. I plan on using this number for a business so it is important that it always works, and that it is assigned to me. Any extra features it has would be a plus (Fax through email, etc.), but not required.
I am in North Carolina, if that makes a difference.

CallCentric is a well established and reliable VoIP carrier that can do what you want. They provide Toll-free and local area code numbers (called DID’s) world-wide. They have local area numbers (DID’s – Direct Inbound Dialing) for all North Carolina area codes too. I have a DID phone number with them here in Canada and find they are very reliable.
You don’t need any VoIP equipment to use the service.
All you have to do is configure your account to forward all incoming calls to any phone or cell number of your choice. They also provide Voice-Mail for free. All Voice-Mails can be set to be forwarded to your email address as an attachment. You can also set the account to direct all incoming calls to a Fax In-box. Copies of the Faxes can be forwarded via email to your email address. In this case, it would be best to have two DID phone numbers. One to forward all regular phone calls, and the other number as a dedicated incoming Fax number.
They are a pay-as-you-go service, meaning no contracts – only pay for what you use.
Their Pay-Per-Call DID’s are only .95/month. Incoming calls to the DID are 1.5¢/min usage. Forwarded calls are only 1.98¢/min to anywhere in USA/Canada (and many parts of Europe and Asia).

I have used http://www.business.gosolo.com for 4 years and have never had a problem with them.

You can get their inbound fax feature and the same line becomes a digital fax machine that never runs out of paper (then you choose what you want to print) – no more wasting paper! OR if you need to email the information, it comes in as a .pdf so it is easy to send along.
There are internal settings to send notices when there are messages or faxes – they can be sent to email or to your phone so you can get your missed calls and faxes immediately.
You can even have conferencing capabilities if you need it.
I know what you mean about regulated … I was weary as well, but after 4 years I couldn’t be happier. I researched for a couple of months before I went with them. I currently have 3 lines with them for different ad campaigns and tracking capabilities.
Being able to easily route the inbound call to different numbers is a breeze and helps to make sure we don’t miss any calls. You can have it ring your cell phone, home phone, office phone, other employees, desk phone (even if there is an extension).
Even if you have 10 customers calling in at the same time, they will never get a busy signal – that is very nice for my business.
When a customer calls in they hear your message and the system immediately starts dialing the numbers. The message we have is:
Thank you for calling Eagle Nationwide. Your call is very important to us, please hold one moment while we locate an available team member that will assist you.
OR if you only want the call to go to just one number you can turn on the Forward capability and when the inbound call comes in, it will go directly to that number with no message.
When you sign up online your number is literally ready to go in minutes!
As you can tell I am very happy with their service. I would recommend them to anyone. I’ve started sounding like a salesperson so I will stop (smiles) – it is definately worth looking into – TAKE CARE!!
